Tutors

We use a number of excellent tutors to assist us in our course production. Our highly skilled team are all members of Sing for Pleasure and bring a range of experiences as professional conductors, musicians, teachers, trainers, adjudicators and workshop leaders. In addition to our Management Team and Trustees, who are regular course tutors, we have recently engaged the following professionals:

Sarah Tenant-Flowers

Sarah directs a versatile array of professional and amateur choirs both in the UK and abroad and has conducted the Hilliard Ensemble, Chamber Choir Ireland, Cape Town Philharmonic Choir, Kantorei der Friedenskirche Düsseldorf, English Baroque Choir, Reading Bach Choir, Harlow Chorus, the RWCMD Chamber Choir, VoxCantab and, as General Manager, worked worldwide with The Sixteen. As guest chorusmaster Sarah has prepared numerous choirs including the BBC Symphony Chorus and she is currently artistic director of professional choir Singscape and chamber choir NC3, and director of the Dubai Opera Festival Chorus which made its debut at the 2019 BBC Proms Dubai singing Beethoven’s 9th Symphony.

In huge demand as a teacher, Sarah tutors choral conducting worldwide as well as for Trinity, Jesus and Hertford Colleges in Oxford, Sing for Pleasure and the Association of British Choral Directors. She featured as conducting mentor to actor Bradley Walsh on BBC2’s TV series ‘Maestro’ and is a choral conducting tutor for the Royal Philharmonic Society’s women conductors programme.

As a singer Sarah performs throughout the UK with leading professional female consort Papagena whose recordings have attracted wide acclaim. Recent concerts have included performances at the Edinburgh, Christchurch and Three Choirs Festivals and collaborations with the Orchestra of the Swan in Stratford and Birmingham.

Suzzie Vango

Passionate about the arts and education, Suzzie’s high-energy vocal workshops have gained her an international reputation as a vocal leader, working with singers of all ages around the world. In demand as a chorus master, director and voice coach she conducts the National Children’s Choir, Polymnia, Orchestra of the Swan Chamber Choir, Ex Cathedra Girls Academy and has been a guest conductor for Ex Cathedra Chamber Choir, Manchester Chamber Choir and the CBSO Children’s Chorus.

An established soprano, she has performed and recorded with some of the UK’s finest choirs including Tenebrae, Polyphony, Ex Cathedra and The Eric Whitacre Singers. Suzzie directs critically the acclaimed female a cappella quintet Papagena who have featured on BBC Radio 3 In Tune and BBC Radio 4 Woman’s Hour, with their debut album, The Darkest Midnight reaching #6 in the UK Classical Charts.

Suzzie is Head of Vocal Studies at Bromsgrove School, Schools Programme Leader for Music of Life Foundation working with children with disabilities, choir leader for Workplace Choir Company, vocal coach for Schumacher College, Dartington and a vocal tutor for Ex Cathedra Education, regularly contributing her own compositions to their set of music education resources, “SingMaker”. International highlights include trips to the UAE, America, Uganda, Singapore, China and Thailand.

Imelda Shirley

Imelda Shirley is an experienced teacher, choral conductor, workshop leader and adjudicator. She has been an active and passionate member of Sing for Pleasure for over 30 years where, as a senior conducting tutor, she works on a range of events including the annual summer school and on the recently acclaimed Vocal Leadership Training Programme (VLTP). 

A former recipient of the BFYC/BT Award for a choral conductor, Imelda now conducts the 100+ strong  Wigan Community Choir and several school choirs. She is Assistant Head of Wigan Music Service, taking a lead for Early Years music education and a number of vocal/curriculum projects in schools. 

Imelda holds an MA in Music Education from the Institute of Education (now UCL) and she sings with the Sine Nomine International Touring Choir.

Carolyn Necklen

Carolyn is a retired music teacher. For the last 17 years of her career she was a freelance music specialist teaching all ages and adults. She conducted many primary school choirs and five adult choirs, including two ladies’ choirs, a male voice choir and a mixed voice choir. Many of these singers were non-music readers. She now conducts just two of those choirs.

Carolyn was also an advisory teacher with music education charity The Voices Foundation and has tutored on many children’s singing days and weekends, in addition to her ongoing work as a conducting tutor for Sing for Pleasure. In addition, she is responsible for co-organising our popular Community Choir Showcases which have been held around the country since 2016.
