"Sing for Pleasure - teacher friendly, National Curriculum compatible" said one Manchester class teacher.

Indeed, we are particularly interested in helping young people and their teachers to enjoy singing and to develop choral skills.

If you are a teacher:

Many of our staff are themselves teachers or people who work in education, who use 'SfP' approaches and songs with their own classes and choirs. SfP courses and events provide a forum for exchanging repertoire and new ideas.

Children love our songs and arrangements, which are always in high demand. All songs are fully 'road-tested' before publication and our teaching approach helps to develop your children's ability to internalise and memorise, as well as improving their co-ordination, concentration and teamwork.

Teaching techniques

SfP advocates quick, efficient teaching through vocal demonstration, repetition and reinforcement.  Conductors are encouraged to maintain pitch throughout the teaching process, making sure phrases link together logically.  Pitch patterning can be used to aid memory.  In essence this is a non-talking, non-stop, non-time-wasting method of teaching using an effective and systematic series of building blocks.  A wide variety of conducting gestures can be incorporated to encourage the children to watch and respond.

Courses and events

We organise singing days throughout the country, staffing them with experienced tutors, offering varied and enjoyable music making. Although we emphasise enjoyment in singing, we are also very concerned with quality too and have created special courses to address issues of motivation and quality.

Through the generosity of supporters, SfP is able to offer a number of bursaries to help teachers attend our courses.

Our conductor training carries accreditation by the ABRSM towards the LRSM diploma.

Repertoire - publications

SfP publishes song collections containing a wide range of enjoyable songs and arrangements, particularly useful for youth choirs and small adult choirs. All the Junior Songbooks contain a variety of songs from a wide selection of musical traditions - useful for teaching National Curriculum requirements.

Our songs have given teachers and amateur choirs a lot of useful and enjoyable material and are clearly presented and reasonably priced. For more information please see the publications page.

Children's Events

We are particularly committed to helping children enjoy singing and develop choral skills. In addition to the singing days, we run residential weekends and longer holidays, where the music is organised by Sing for Pleasure tutors and there are pastoral co-ordinators on hand to direct other activities.

We are grateful to the John Lewis Partnership for its financial support of our work with young people.

SfP organises inset-training, children's workshops and other activities for individual schools - the National Office would be pleased to discuss options.
